Survey and a Brief Life Update

1. Would you ever go "under the knife" (or laser, or dental pick) for cosmetic purposes? What and why, and would it really be worth it?

Welllll..... that's a bit of a can of worms because I have been under the knife previously when I was three. Obviously, the choice wasn't mine to make. But given the circumstances, I probably would have done the same thing. I was born with a hereditary condition that causes people in my family to have comically large ears. Somehow this condition was amplified in me, and not only did my ears stick out like Dumbo, but I had a second earlobe on one ear as well. There was nothing that could be done to hide my condition, as it even stuck out through my long hair.

I am grateful that my parents made that decision because it saved me from a lot of grief in elementary school. One of my friends and classmates had a similar issue. His parents made him get buzz cuts, which made his ears stick out even more. It's been so long that I forget all the stupid names he was called, but the situation stuck with me because it just as easily could have been me.

Still, I had a lot of ear infections, and I was in a lot of pain as a child. I spent a lot of recess time indoors because of this. Often one of my classmates were put on rotation to spend a recess inside with me so that I wouldn't have to spend that time alone.

I could have benefited from headgear as I still have a huge overbite that my parents didn't get treated in time. Even though I wasn't teased because of my ears, I was still often called a duck, or compared to The Simpsons. It was weird because another friend of mine in the same school wore headgear to treat what I think was an overbite, but she didn't get teased. I didn't ask her about it, and to my knowledge nobody else did either.

If dental work wasn't so expensive, I would undergo the procedure to fix my overbite even if it does change my overall facial structure that I have seen in the mirror every day for my entire life.

People can be cruel. If you get one flaw fixed, other people will find another thing to judge you and make comments about. They say that kids are cruel, but a lot of this stuff continues in the workplace long after we have graduated from high school.

I think that cosmetic surgery has its benefits for reconstructive purposes, and that it shouldn't be disregarded as unnecessary. It helps people like me who were born with birth defects, as well as those who suffer from disfigurement as a result of accidents keep their confidence. However, these surgeries wouldn't be necessary if we lived in a world that was more accepting of people who are different.

I was also born with a second, non functional thumb on one hand that was also removed. If we had extra fingers that we can use, how would that change the way we interact with musical instruments such as guitar or piano? I think that would be amazing.

2. Describe your dream home, including location, design, and who/what’s in there with you.

I would love to own a log cabin in Hokkaido that has a skylight so that I can take in the stars at night. I picked Hokkaido because it is the prefecture in Japan that most resembles Canada, and I can get away from the hot and sticky summers that Japan is known for.

This house would have a dedicated room for entertaining. It would have 90s decor and it would be complete with a bar (even though I don't drink), pool table, air hockey table, ping pong table, and my favourite arcade games. Right down to the black carpeted floors with the crazy patterns that are clearly visible even under the low lighting that these old arcades used to have.

There would also be a stage for karaoke/in house entertainment that would double as studio space for recording videos. This room would also have a removable partition where my full art studio would be. This way I can work on my art while entertaining people at the same time if I wanted to.

3. You have one month to travel the world, all expenses paid. Where do you go and what do you do once you arrive?

I would like to see more of Japan before seeing the rest of the world. It's been over five years since my last trip to Tokyo and I miss it a lot! From there, I would like to see Korea and more of Asia. From there, I would head to Europe before returning to Canada to see more of the country where I came from. Domestic flights within Canada are crazy expensive, and I've seen more of the US as a result of this.

4. What scares the bloody heck out of you? Would you face it down if someone paid you? What’s your price?

A lot of things! Maybe the true crime podcasts that I listen to are partly to blame. The disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley and other disappearances like hers is the reason that I won't go on a cruise. I also won't go on roller coasters, or go sky diving. No amount of money will change my mind. They say YOLO, but there are no second chances if something goes wrong with that parachute.

5. And of course, you’re stranded on an island. What five simple items do you have with you? How do you survive? Anyone in particular you’d like to be stranded with? What would they bring to the table?

Camping and survival gear, which would include, but not limited to a tent, a knife, fishing gear, and a compass. I would also have my diaries with me to log my journey, both for personal records, and in case if something happened to me.

It's like I blinked and two weeks have passed since my last update. I talked to my friend recently, and she made a comment about how life is going by so quickly. I couldn't agree more.

I've been plugging away on some art behind the scenes, and I hope to get this wrapped quickly. Among the highlights is that the other day I went on a late night grocery store run. I usually shop without a basket to encourage myself to buy less, but boy oh boy, this was a mistake that day. When I was reaching to grab something, I dropped the salt that I was holding. It was like it was happening in slow motion, and my thoughts were "NOOOOOOOOOOO" in that cliché voiced dropped audio filter. I flagged down an employee to clean up the glass and salt on the floor. I apologised for my stupidity, and I insisted on paying for the damages.

I want to post again soon with a more substantial update.
